Now that midsize sedans have more tips than a Denny’s waiter has the cool factor of quad exhaust tips died out?
Bet you forgot about that part of this Titan concept.
Yep, thats the new Camry.

The mostly boring but occasionally exciting part of me has really been loving what Camry has been doing with the SE/XSE cars.
I guess in a way though, cause like they aren’t cool now for me more so I feel that they’re required on all cars to be normal.

I don’t think so, and odd number of tips is cooler

I like em on fast cars.

hasnt been cool for a while. not that companies know that.

Saw a 6 series w/ quad tips, however only the outer most exit was actually connected to the exhaust. It was very apparent that two had nothing behind them

I like them if they are necessary, and that’s not very often.
![]() 11/01/2016 at 10:49 |

I actually feel the same! Especially with the performance coming from these smaller engines compared to the cars we grew up with.

1 tip for every 2 cylinders.
I4's are allowed duals.
V6's are allowed three (preferably mounted in the center.
V8's can have quads.
V10's get 5.
V12's get MANY POOCHUTES.
Veyron and successor get ALL THE POOCHUTES.

Isn’t “no” exhaust tips what’s hip and happening now?
![]() 11/01/2016 at 10:51 |

No. It’s not cool. Because everyone has it to try and look sporty even though it’s slow.
![]() 11/01/2016 at 10:54 |

Well they think trim name badges are cool, so...

Stock wimpy and/or over-styled tips, not so much.
Cool aftermarket dual exhausts with dual-tip mufflers, sure.

8 tips is where it’s at.

you’d think. people ARE stupid enough to assume that means its electric. Hide them like classic mercs do.

Who needs more than two? Seems excessive to me.

They went Maximum Poochute on the Galibier:

Dual center exhaust is the best right now

My (former) motorcycle says yes, quad exhausts are good.
Bonus head scratcher: 4-2-1 headers to catalytic converter to 1-2-4 exhaust.

I think it depends entirely on the car in question and the sound they emit. A “sport” model Sonata making no noise whatsoever? That’s pretty tame; nothing more than a styling exercise from the marketing department. A loud valved exhaust on a new M6 though? Between the badge and the noise, that’s RUDE in a way that I love.

Except they aren’t slow. Just boring. Normal cars are actually universally pretty quick, just still a yawn

I thought they looked really good on the new WRX when it came out. My coworker had one and it had this green/yellow highlight ring that was pretty sharp. But for the most part, an exhaust tip for every cylinder? GTFO.

Approved.

My wife’s ‘14 MDX has no visible exhaust tips, fwiw.

My car follows this formula (V8).
Is there any V6 with three exhausts?
![]() 11/01/2016 at 13:56 |

When are they ever truly necessary? When you have 4 sets of headers?
![]() 11/01/2016 at 13:57 |
|
No idea.

Looks cool, even though it doesn’t make much sense.
Three tips on the new Type R make even less sense.
![]() 11/01/2016 at 13:59 |

Yeah, when two tips are fouled by exhaust and two are showroom shiny, that’s a pretty lame look.
![]() 11/01/2016 at 13:59 |

Yeah - good look.

Hahaha!

In most cases, it is excessive and just an attempt to make a car appear more sporty. The cars I really appreciate them on are “sleepers” where the quad tips are one of the only clues that it’s something more than a run-of-the-mill sedan (E39 M5, Chevy SS).

The only ones coming to mind are the LFA, the 458 and the new Type R. F40's center tip is a wastegate dump.

Mitsubishi Minica Dangan!

I’m thinking when two of them are openings for active exhaust.
I had the Corvette in mind. Don’t two of them only open as a bypass when actuated?
![]() 11/01/2016 at 16:10 |
|
Ah, gotcha. I’m not sure about that. I believe that’s what they’ve done on the new Civic Type R exhaust: two exhausts with mufflers in normal mode, and the single center, red, “angry” exhaust in R mode.
![]() 11/01/2016 at 17:55 |
|
No need for three on that one.
There is one pipe to the rear, so you only need one tip (+1 for any active bypass)
As far as the Corvette goes, this is what I was talking about.
The outside pair open up under higher throttle openings. the inside two are “neighborhood friendly”
My rule on tips? If you aren’t running anything clever like the above, it’s one tip per pipe.
For example - this is completely unnecessary. That one pipe (as seen on Mrs McMike’s Accord) does not require two mufflers. One would do the job just fine.

Yeah, mine goes 2 -> 4, purely for aesthetics.
